With the mammogram being the best tool for doctors in the doctor's arsenal at diagnosing and evaluating breast cancer, one must wonder if the mammogram is on the way out. With the latest research in breast cancer, scientists have now deviced a new diagnostic test of breast cancer that may lead to the mammogram becoming obsolete in the battle against breast cancer.

Whether a painless, portable device that uses electrical current rather than X-ray to look for breast cancer could be an alternative to traditional mammograms is under study at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mammograms are generally uncomfortable and in some cases painful for women.  However, for many women it is considered a necessary breast cancer diagnostic test, especially for women who are deemed to be in a higher risk group.  However, a new study indicates that there a numbing gel could ease the pain and discomfort associated with mammograms.

Women at high risks of breast cancer often conduct breast self exams.  However, breast self-exams should not take the place of clinical exams and diagnostic testing when checking for breast cancer.  A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that is designed to detect the development of breast cancer.  A mammogram along with a clinical breast exam by your doctor is the most effective way of detecting an early onset of breast cancer.
