    Christina Applegate has Breast Cancer

    Christina Applegate
Christina Applegate's publicist released a statement on Saturday, August 2, 2008 confirming that the 36-year old actress has breast cancer. The announcement came as reports began surfacing that the actress was reportedly undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Test Error Rate Incorrect

The Cameron Inquiry, Newfoundland & Labrador's public inquiry into what went wrong with hormone receptor tests in the province, learned that the reported error rate for faulty hormone receptor testing was initially indicated to be approximately 3 percent, within and "acceptable range".  Officials with Eastern Health had downplayed the error rate,  but later revealed that the error rate was much higher.  Testimony given at the breast cancer inquiry of Newfoundland and Labrador learned that the rate was in excess of 40 percent.

The inquiry into the breast cancer test scandal and faulty hormone receptor tests in Newfoundland and Labrador was told that problems being experienced go far beyond the management and funding of the pathology lab.  The executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) had strong words for the Cameron Inquiry as he talked about the issues at hand.

Staff turnover blamed for botched cancer tests

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Eastern Health's former top administrative physician, Dr. Bob Williams, told the inquiry into faulty breast cancer tests on Tuesday that he believes inaccurate hormone receptor testing went on as long as it did because of a high turnover of medical staff.  The St. John's-based inquiry is examining why 383 breast cancer patients received the wrong results from hormone receptor tests - used to determine treatment options - from the General Hospital immunohistochemistry lab from 1997 to 2005. It's also examining what happened after the problems were discovered and how Eastern Health handled disclosure of the scandal.  (Source: canada.com)

Another Newfoundland patient told of cancer retesting

Eastern Health confirmed Friday there are two breast cancer patients who received word this week they were affected by hormone receptor testing problems.  In a statement released late Friday, Eastern Health said two patients — one on Newfoundland's east coast and one on the west coast — received their retest results this week.  (Source: CBC News)

N.L. minister concedes he should have acknowledged patients not contacted

Newfoundland and Labrador's health minister expressed regret Friday about wrong information he presented regarding the full scope of mistakes involving breast cancer patients.  Ross Wiseman told the Cameron inquiry that his statements of assurance may have led people who had reason to worry not to do anything about their concerns because they believed they would have been contacted if there was a problem.  (Source: CBC News)

Cancer patient informed only this week about retesting: Eastern Health

A breast cancer patient learned only a few days ago that her tissue samples had been retested, Newfoundland and Labrador's largest health authority has confirmed.  Eastern Health, which said last year it had notified all patients involved in a widespread review of hormone receptor testing, said it is very concerned that a patient only recently had learned about retesting.  (Source: CBC News)

Williams viewed cancer test note merely as 'update'

A briefing note sent to Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams in August 2006 laid out important details about flawed breast cancer testing, although he may not have been aware of its importance.  (Source: CBC News)

Legal advice behind withholding of cancer data, inquiry told

Newfoundland and Labrador's health minister admitted Thursday he did not read briefings on flawed cancer testing for several months, and that legal advice led health officials to not disclose what they knew about error rates.  (Source: CBC News)

Litigation threat kept lips locked on cancer tests, minister says

A former Newfoundland and Labrador health minister says government officials kept quiet about flawed breast cancer testing because of the spectre of a lawsuit.  Tom Osborne also said that while he is angry Eastern Health withheld critical information about flawed laboratory testing, he is confident that the authority has fixed severe problems that triggered the judicial inquiry, where he testified Wednesday.  (Source: CBC News)
